“In the summer of 1994, forty-four painters, illustrators, designers, animators, printmakers, and sculptors were invited to create a new beast as a way of celebrating the approaching end of the 20th century. These beasts would be collected between two covers under the rubric A millennium bestiary. The brief was simple: devise a beast that symbolises any aspect of the past one thousand years, draw that beast in blank ink on a white sheet of paper no larger than 15 inches by 22. Write an accompanying text of 100 words.”–Preface.
